The studies included participants with a variety of health problems: some were considered healthy, some had functional disabilities, and some had multiple or chronic illnesses. Elastic resistance training included a variety of exercises, targeting both upper and lower body muscles.

What the research tells us

The results support the use of elastic resistance training as an effective way to increase muscle strength in individuals.

  • This gives you a good workout. You can do the same exercises you do with free weights. The difference lies in the positioning of the tape. For example, you can stand on the band and grab the handles to do bicep curls. You can tie it to a door and do tricep push-ups. You can wrap the band around a pole or chair to do chest exercises or shoulder rotations. You can even do floor exercises like these seated bicep curls.   • They add variety. Resistance bands allow you to change your position in many ways and create resistance from all directions: to the side, over, behind, under, etc. It changes the way your body works and how exercise feels.

  • They don’t take up much space. Unlike equipment that requires a lot of floor space, resistance bands can easily be stored under a bed or dresser or in a closet.
  • They move well. The resistance bands weigh very little. You can easily put them in your suitcase. This is perfect when you don’t have much time and don’t have access to your usual equipment.
  • They are perfect for all fitness levels. Depending on how you use them, the bands can be perfect for beginners as well as the more experienced. You can use them for basic movements or add intensity to traditional movements.
